How are your marketing efforts related to the latest changes in the National Fire Protection Association's electrical safety standard, NFPA 70E® Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace?
The NFPA 70E® has a specific purpose, and it never mentions marketing. After all, these are two entirely different subjects. Or are they?
This manual covers horizontal and vertical squirrel-cage induction motors in the 300 to 5,000 horsepower range, low- and medium-voltage. Most of the principles covered apply to other sizes as well. This manual focuses primarily on IEC motors and standards.
There are changes in the National Electrical Code that EASA members need to know about. View this webinar to learn:
On October 22, 2018, the European Commission submitted its plan to expand motor and power converter efficiency regulations. As part of the EcoDesign directive, the Commission has been working on expanded motor and drive regulations for several years. The European Union directive will address both motors and variable frequency drives (VFDs) from .75 to 1,000 kW (1 to 1340 hp).
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has published a new standard, IEEE Std. 3004.8-2016, “Recommended Practice for Motor Protection in Industrial and Commercial Power Systems.” This document provides guidance for motor protection for industrial and commercial applications. As motor service centers, the more we understand about the application and protection of motors in their applications, the better service we can offer to our customers.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard for insulation resistance testing of motor and generator windings that was published in 2002 has been revised. The 2013 edition was published in March 2014. This article examines the changes to the standard.
Working knowledge of standards helps members provide better customer service. A quality repair in an EASA service center will yield a motor or pump that will meet just about any vibration specification. And good EASA technicians could use their "finger vibrometer" to verify that. However, a large number of EASA customers demand a more formal means of verifying acceptably smooth operation. A few sophisticated customers have developed their own vibration standards, but most depend on standards organizations such as the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) (electric motors), the Hydraulic Institute (HI) (pumps) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). There are also industry specific standards organizations such as the American Petroleum Institute (API) for refineries and the Submersible Wastewater Pump Association (SWPA). A working knowledge of the various standards will be beneficial for EASA service center technicians and managers. The three examples in this article will help illustrate the scope and diversity of the various vibration standards a service center may encounter.
The challenge for every motor repair firm is twofold: to repair the equipment properly, and to demonstrate to their customers by means of adequate testing and documentation that rewound motors retain their operating efficiency. Following the guidelines in this document will help you accomplish both.
To ensure that motors retain their efficiencies when rewound, EASA also strongly recommends that electric motor repair centers comply with ANSI/EASA Standard AR100: Recommended Practice For The Repair Of Rotating Electrical Apparatus and strictly adhere to the “DOs” and “DON’Ts” presented in this article. These guidelines, which contain safe values (based on available data) and correct procedures, apply to both energy efficient and standard motors. Further study of the matter continues, and these guidelines will be revised if additional information warrants.
This 40-page booklet provides great advice for obtaining the longest, most efficient and cost-effective operation from general and definite purpose electric motors.
